What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an accredited course from Mental Health First Aid Australia. It teaches everyday people how to notice when someone is struggling, start the conversation and guide them towards professional help. Think first aid, but for mental health: not therapy, just the skills to help until the right support takes over.

What your people learn

  • Spot the signs of common mental health problems, from depression and anxiety to psychosis and substance use
  • Start the conversation and listen without judgement
  • Ask directly about suicidal thoughts, and respond safely
  • Support someone through a panic attack or after a traumatic event
  • Point people to the right help: EAP, GPs, helplines and more

Built for teams, groups and communities

I run private courses for workplaces, community groups, sporting clubs and not-for-profits, at your place.

Workplaces

Trained Mental Health First Aiders are the people who notice early, start the conversation and point colleagues to the right support. They're also a practical, visible control for psychosocial hazards, which NSW employers now have to manage the same way they manage physical ones.

Training for workplaces

Sporting clubs, community groups and not-for-profits

Coaches, team managers and committee members are often the first to notice when a player or volunteer isn't okay. The club rate makes it easy to train a group before the season, and it can easily be covered by a community grant.

Ben Lucas

I'm Ben.

A licensed Mental Health First Aid instructor living in Collaroy. I've trained hundreds of people, from mine site crews to teachers to junior sport volunteers.

My day job is wellbeing at work. I lead customer wellbeing at Streamtime, project management software for creative businesses. Before that I was a mental wellbeing consultant, facilitated for Gotcha4Life and founded 2 Minute Mates, a mental health project. I know how this stuff lands on a Tuesday morning in the real world, not in a training room.

"He was able to continuously hold the attention of a room full of Gen Z's, which is not an easy task at all!"

Questions people ask

How much does Mental Health First Aid training cost?

Workplace training is $4,950 + GST for up to 15 people, with extra participants at $295 each up to 20. Sporting clubs, community groups and not-for-profits pay $3,300 + GST for up to 15. Travel is included anywhere in Greater Sydney. Outside Sydney, travel and accommodation are charged at cost.

Is Mental Health First Aid a legal requirement in NSW?

No law requires MHFA specifically. NSW WHS law does require employers to identify and manage psychosocial risks, such as high job demands, low support and exposure to traumatic events. Trained Mental Health First Aiders are one practical control that helps people spot problems early and get support.

Is the training accredited?

Yes. I'm a licensed Mental Health First Aid Australia instructor delivering the Standard MHFA course. Participants who complete the course and the assessment become Accredited Mental Health First Aiders for three years.

Where do you run it?

At your workplace, clubhouse or a venue you choose. Anywhere in Greater Sydney is included, and I travel to regional NSW and interstate with travel charged at cost. I'm based in Collaroy on the Northern Beaches.

How many people should we train?

Enough that anyone can easily reach a trained person, across shifts, sites and teams. For most small and medium businesses and clubs, a group of 10 to 15 is a strong start.

Can our club get funding for it?

Usually, yes. Local council community grants and state sport and wellbeing programs regularly fund training like this, so the club rate can often be covered in full.

What's the format and timing?

We work that out together on the planning call, around your rosters, shifts or training nights. It's always delivered in person, at your place.
